Witnessing a bond between a man and a woman is something that is considered a once in a lifetime event. Celebrating this meaningful event is made even more exciting the moment the bride and the groom profess their eternal love for each other. For sixteen years, I have been showing audiences how to find humor in not-so-funny stuff. Thousands of people have laughed a lot in my presentations yet I don't tell jokes. Below are some ways I get people to laugh. And you can too.
1- Set the Scene for Laughter
If you want to lighten up your program, you might want to let the audience know this, even before you say one word. Project some lighthearted visuals as the audience is entering the room. Play some copyright-free uplifting music as they enter. Or, add some humor to your presentation title or program description. My bio, for example, has my list of accomplishments, playfully followed by "His mother is very proud of him."
2- Poke Fun at Yourself
Again, even before you open your mouth, you can show the audience that you don't take yourself too seriously by adding some playful things about you in your introduction. I, for example, have the introducer tell the audience that I am the author of seven books which have sold well over 30 copies. Then the person corrects their mistake and says, "Oops, that's 300,000 copies."
3- Get a Laugh with a Prop
It has been said that 80% of what people learn is visual. If this is true, then speakers need to enhance their talks with something to visually illustrate what they are saying. A prop is a great way to do this because it not only makes your message memorable but it can also get a laugh. Among other things, I use balloons to illustrate how people can let go of their stress; an inflatable globe to illustrate how we often carry the world around on our shoulders; and a plastic hammer which I use to hit myself on the head when I goof up. All make a point and all get a laugh.
4- Your Humor Stories
Open your humor eyes and ears and look and listen for the funny things that happen all around you. Families are an especially good resource for finding humor stories. Not too long ago, my Mom, who will be 93-years-old this year, told me an incident which I have now incorporated into my opening. Every time she goes to the doctor, she hires a van service to take her their and back. One late afternoon it didn't show up to take her home. Since the doctor had to close the office for the day, he suggested that she wait for the van in the pizza parlor next door. After waiting a long time without the van arriving, my Mom went up to the counter and asked, "Do you deliver?" When the man behind the counter replied, "Of course, we do. We're a pizza place." My Mom said, "Great. Then I'd like a pepperoni pizza and I'd like to go with it."
5- Borrow Some Witty Words
While waiting for your own humor-related stories to appear, you might want to borrow some funny short quotes for famous folk to lighten up your talks. Quotation books, the TV, newspapers, and magazines such as Reader's Digest are great resources for locating great quotes. Since I frequently speak to hospice groups, Woody Allen's comments about death and dying are appropriate. My favorite, "There are worse things in life than death. Have you ever spent an evening with an insurance salesman?"
6- Collect Audience Anecdotes
Sometimes audiences say the funniest things. When they do write it down. It could be a big laugh in your next presentation. For years, I've been asking audiences, "How do you spell relief?" My answer is "L-A-U-G-H". Then one day a woman in the back row called out, "D-I-V-O-R-C-E." It got a huge laugh for her that day and continues to get a laugh for me when I retell it.
7- Make it Relevant
One final word about using humor in your presentations. Make sure it is relevant. Amusing an audience for the sake of getting a laugh might be ideal for a stand-up comedian or an after-dinner humorist but it's probably not OK for most speakers. If your humor doesn't make a point or have a purpose

I've known many people that were blindsided by this 'addiction'. If he talks about women as if they are objects more than people than that should be a pretty good indication of how he feels about them. Jokes about woman being stupid or objects fall into the same category as talking about it. Rude and sexist jokes are harder to tell if you don't actually believe them.
3. Watch his family dynamics when you visit.
This will show you how he was raised to feel about woman. Watch how his father and mother interact with each other and even his extended family if they are around. I've actually heard fathers encourage their sons when it comes to cheating and porn. A fathers influence on their son should never be underestimated because most sons want to make them proud and please them which causes them to be like their father.
4. The ring finger being longer than the index finger.
I saw this on a show and while it may not be an exact science it is supposed to mean that a man has more testosterone in him than if his ring finger was the same or smaller in length than his index finger. A higher testosterone level can equal a higher sex drive. So check out his hands to see his testosterone level.
5. Facial Symmetry
If they have a more symmetrical face they are considered alphas in the men world and are supposed to have really great genes which make them more attractive to other woman and probably boosts their own confidence up sexually. They think they are sexy and therefore are more sexual in nature.
6. Their past experiences
Do they have a history of spending every night at the strip club? Do they have a whole collection of porn that fills up their shelves? Have they cheated on their girlfriends in the past?
All of these sings can signify and guy who really, really, likes sex. Contrary to popular belief, most guys don't spend all their time in strip clubs or watching porn. Most normal guys want a real woman that they can look at and play with. You want a guy who wants to watch you and not a stripper.

With girls however, I am breaking new ground. All of my children are perfect of course. Yet for some reason my eighteen month old little girl sometimes, well quite honestly, she makes me tremble with fear. Is she adorable? Absolutely. Does she make me laugh? Multiple times every day.

I know, I know all little kids like to put on their parents shoes. No, it is much more serious than that. Admittedly she does not discriminate. So much so that I am scared she will turn her ankle some day.
So what is it that is scaring me? It is a combination of factors.
The first one is that "shoe" is one of the first three words that she learned. She learned how to say "Mommy" first of course. Then she learned how to say "shoe" and then she learned "Daddy". You can see where I rank.
The second thing is that she can walk in a pair of high heels as good as any adult. I am not kidding on this one. I have never tried walking in a pair of high heels. I do not know first hand what the difficulty factor is. I did have the impression, however, that it was a rather difficult thing for some to master. Yet my eighteen month old has done so.
Is this normal? Is she a phenomenon like Tiger Woods? The problem as I see it is that Tiger Woods special ability would eventually make him millions and millions. My daughter's ability could potentially cost me dearly.
There is just one more thing. My wife told me the other day that while she was cleaning the house she walked by our daughter while she was flipping through a People magazine. Libby (a.k.a the princess) had stopped on a page in the magazine which was devoted to showing us what certain stars were wearing to a red carpet event. She was pointing at the footwear on each picture and saying, "shoes, shoes, shoes, shoes."
This can not be good for me. What does my future hold? I am scared to death that the next word she learns will be "mall". It is one syllable. It would be easy enough for her to say.
I am confident though that it will be a little while before she masters the words, "credit card".
